I am the kind of parent that childless people hate. I take my kids to hip restaurants and am not deterred by the complete lack of booster seats, high chairs, or chicken fingers on the menu. I am simply not content to while away my weekends at home or limit our outings to places that have designated stroller parking. I wheel our mammoth double wide into petite boutiques and carry my cooing baby into austere galleries. We boldly go where no family unit has gone before.

Barney Allis Plaza: Downtown KC Sweet Spot #8.

Downtown Sweet Spot #8: Barney Allis Plaza (12th & Wyandotte/Central).

The best urban parks are little more than pint sized pockets of green in bustling locations. The winning formula involves a few shade trees, some well placed benches and a square for gathering, in a spot where the skyline towers around you.

Kansas City’s Barney Allis Plaza is right up there on my list of favorites (which also includes Portland’s Jamison Square and a sublime mini park that I stumbled upon in San Francisco and will probably never be able to find again!)

Barney Allis Plaza has fountains, whimsical sculptural elements, patches of grass, and plenty of picnic benches nestled under shady trees.  And it’s smack dab in the middle of downtown action. Definitely a winner.

Tip: In July, the large court is home to Kansas City’s professional world tennis team, the KC Explorers.
